For founders and product leads building sports analytics or betting intelligence products for the US market.

Most scaling startups split the work: one agency for the app, another for the web platform, a studio for the brand, a fourth vendor for marketing. The result is four products that look like four companies – and an endless synchronisation loop between vendors. Outlier did the opposite. One team designed the web platform, the iOS app, the brand identity, and the marketing system across a 4+ year partnership. The shared design system was never an aesthetic choice – it is what let a betting analytics product ship on four fronts at startup speed.

TL;DR

  • One dedicated team covered Outlier's web platform, iOS app, brand identity, and marketing website – design plus WordPress development in a single delivery
  • 20% paid conversion within six weeks of launch, 1,000+ subscribers at $20/mo, zero paid acquisition
  • $10.43M Series A raised in December 2025; users average 4:31 per session inside stat-heavy research screens
  • A shared token system and a 1,200+ component library keep web and iOS aligned without duplicating design work

What Is Outlier and What Did We Build?

Outlier is a US sports betting analytics platform that turns odds data from multiple sportsbooks into decision tools: Expected Value (EV+), arbitrage, middle bets, player props, and de-vig fair-value calculations across NBA, MLB, NHL, NFL, and soccer. We joined at day 0 – wireframes before a single production screen existed – and the engagement grew into four parallel workstreams:

  • Web platform – the core analytics dashboard: props, team markets, EV states, filters, and sharing flows for pro bettors
  • iOS app – a mobile companion with the full analytics depth of web, built on shared design tokens and a 1,200+ component library
  • Brand identity – logotype, brandbook, iconography, and tone of voice, applied from App Store screenshots to office walls
  • Marketing website – an acquisition and investor-facing site, designed and developed on WordPress by our team, including an SEO content hub, a sportsbook bonus directory, and lifecycle emails

Why One Dedicated Team Instead of Four Vendors?

Because the product demanded it. Outlier's web terminal, iOS app, App Store assets, and partner promo templates all run on the same token architecture – one five-colour accent palette, one component logic, each platform's typography matched to its native conventions. When a new sportsbook integrates, its brand tokens propagate from the product interface to the marketing templates without a redesign cycle.

Split that across four vendors and every release becomes a coordination project: the brand studio approves, the app agency adapts, the marketing team reinterprets. With one embedded team working through our Dedicated Product Team model, a decision made in the web design system reaches iOS and the marketing site in the same sprint. The engagement started as a Post-MVP Evolution retainer and scaled into the dedicated format as the roadmap widened – same team, growing scope, no re-onboarding.

How Do You Design for Data This Dense?

Outlier's core problem was not visual. It was making professional betting math usable without dumbing it down. Three decisions carried most of the weight:

  • De-vig math became comparable states, not tables. The platform supports five de-vig methods – Multiplicative, Additive, Power, Shin, and Probit – plus Kelly bet sizing at Full, Half, and Quarter. Instead of a spreadsheet view, each market detail shows every method side by side with fair value and Kelly percent, next to a live odds table spanning up to nine sportsbooks. Pro users compare; newer users still read it.
  • Education lives inside the interface. A built-in explainer walks through the Expected Value formula with a worked betting example. Newer bettors follow the math in context instead of leaving the product for a glossary – one reason sessions average 4:31 on stat-heavy screens.
  • Accessibility is part of the system, not an afterfix. A colour-vision-deficiency mode ships as a first-class appearance setting, with the palette engineered so favourable, neutral, and unfavourable states stay distinguishable in both modes.

The Numbers

Within six weeks of launch, Outlier reached a 20% paid conversion rate and 1,000+ subscribers at $20/mo – with zero paid acquisition. In December 2025 the company raised a $10.43M Series A. The partnership is now in its fifth year.

"Since launch, the app hit a 20% paid conversion rate and 1,000+ subscribers in six weeks – with zero advertising. Flatstudio's ability to challenge us, understand users, and move fast makes them a critical long-term partner." – Luis Lafer-Sousa, Co-Founder of Outlier

Where This Fits

Outlier is not an isolated case for us. We have spent 8+ years designing data-dense products in sports analytics – odds research, fantasy and picks platforms, prediction markets – with processes built specifically for real-time sports data. The same systems thinking carries into our SaaS, fintech, and iGaming work, where the interface is the product and clarity beats decoration.

This is the overview of the Flatstudio × Outlier case. Deep-dive articles on the iOS app, the design system, and the marketing system are in progress – each will unpack one dimension of the work in detail.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Who designed the Outlier betting analytics app?

Flatstudio designed Outlier's web platform, iOS app, brand identity, and marketing website as one dedicated team, starting from wireframes at day 0. The partnership has run for over four years and covers product design, design systems, branding, and WordPress development of the marketing site.

What is a dedicated product design team?

A dedicated product design team is an embedded unit that executes a client's roadmap on a flat monthly fee – working inside the client's Slack, Figma, and sprint cycle. Unlike per-project vendors, the team carries product context forward, so decisions propagate across app, web, brand, and marketing without re-onboarding.

Can one team handle product, brand, and marketing design?

Yes, when the work runs on a shared system. For Outlier, one token architecture powers the web terminal, the iOS app, App Store assets, and partner promo templates. A single team maintaining that system removes the coordination overhead that multiple vendors create between releases.

How long does it take to design a sports betting analytics platform?

It depends on data complexity and the number of sports and markets. Outlier grew iteratively over a 4+ year partnership – from day 0 wireframes to a full multi-product system. A focused product audit runs 2–4 weeks; an MVP or redesign is scoped during discovery.

How much does it cost to design a betting analytics app?

Scope drives the number: sports covered, data providers, market types, and platforms all shift the estimate. A focused audit of friction points costs far less than a build from scratch. The precise figure comes from a short discovery scoped against your stage and data complexity.
